Nick had been admiring Hyukjae ever since Middle School started. When the first note he played on his piano keyboard during the school's talent show captured her attention immediately. The way his hands moved, the face that he makes whenever he's in the sanctuary of the music that he played. She would secretly watch him from afar. Approaching him isn't an option.
Hyukjae had won so many Music Awards with his piano skills. He has this flaming passion inside of him towards the piano. Its like seeing a soother version of him, or more likely a softer kind of him. Nick fell in love with him and also the melody that he produced from his fingers. The kind of tone that could cause anyone's knees fell for mercy. Sadly, no one noticed that in him. Nobody took him seriously except for Nick. He wasn't popular. Just an ordinary student at school. Not for Nick, he isn't. He's someone so much more.
Nick was just too determine to get to know him better. She wanted to learn how to play the instrument that set his passion to flame. That freed his sorrow from pain. She wanted to experience that kind of feeling as well. Just thinking about it already gave her shivers. She wanted to play the music that he loved.
So one day, Nick went to the auditorium where Hyukjae secretly practiced his piano after school. He likes it when no one is around. It gave him the kind of surrounding he craved for. The beauty of silence and humanity.
Nick gathered all of her guts and took a deep breath. "Here goes everything," she walked a step forward and greeted him slowly. "Hey, Hyukjae.." she said. Hyukjae stopped playing turned his head around. "Who are you?" he asked. Nick smiled to herself 'cause the situation was getting pretty good. "I'm Nick. What song were you playing earlier? I liked it." Hyukjae grinned and showed her the music sheets that he was playing earlier.
"If we could meet again.." she asked.
"Its a classic," he answered.
"Yiruma, right?" "Yeahh, he's the best."
The situation suddenly gotten a bit awkward. Then Nick remembered the main reason she was here. Why did she came here in the first place. "Hyukjae," she spoke. "Can you, teach me how to play the piano?"
Hyukjae didn't expected this. He was pretty surprised that someone besides him is actually pretty interested in this kind of music. Not many people these days are listening to slow musics anymore ever since Rock music started taking over the whole music industry. Ruining the arts of true music.
"I don't think I'm the right person to teach you. I'm not the best pianist here. You better find someone else.." he responded. Nick was a bit disappointed. But she didn't gather her guts for nothing. "I saw you play all the time. I love to see the way you let your hands do the music and your mind do the actions. How you mixed everything into a melody that nobody can interpret. Please, teach me.."
Hyukjae was impressed with Nick. The enthusiasm she showed for music was heart-warming to him. Its been a while to see someone having interest in things like this. So without hesitation, he agreed. But on one condition though...
"You must always remember the most sacred rule whenever you're in the presence of the piano," he said.
Nick raised her right eyebrow and asked him the rule. He smiled and said, "Feel the piano. Be it, don't control it. The piano, controls you," he revealed the secret. Nick nodded and bowed to him. "Thank you. That meant a lot. I'll keep it in mind," she said.
Ever since that day, they both always promise to meet up during lunch or maybe after school for the piano lessons. Hyukjae was an amazing tutor and he taught everything she needs to know. The right angle, the infinite feeling, and most of all, the power of improvising.
"Improvise?" she wondered. "Every pianist needs to know how to improvise with everything you have. The nature that surrounds you with its modesty," Hyukjae and his words of wisdom never failed to hit her heart right at the spot. His words were just too amazing to be true. "Well, how do you do it then?" she asked. Hyukjae examined the things around him for a second and then looked at Nick back. "Tell anything in this room. Any kind of object," he ordered.
Nick nodded and do as she was told to. Then she spotted something that caught her. "A glass," she said. Hyukjae smiled and asked her, "Why did you chose the glass?" "Because its fragile. And most hearts are like glasses. Fragile like a glass.." she explained. Hyukjae was pretty satisfied with her answer. "There you have it. That shows the sign of sadness. Bittersweet story. Now, all you have to do is let your fingers do the talking and your heart do the work,"
Nick placed her fingers on the keyboard and thus she produced a sublime melody. After a while she stopped. "Did I really, did that?" she said. Hyukjae nodded and patted her head. "You did it. It was beautiful,"
Nick owed Hyukjae a lot for taking the time to teach her the true meaning of music. The real entertainment of music. She wanted to confess her feelings to him. And she knew the only way to do it is to express it in the language that only he would understand.
One day after school, Nick went to the auditorium 20 minutes earlier than they usually promised. She reminisced everything that she was trained to, the skills that was given to her. The only thing on her mind right now was Hyukjae, and why she chose him.
A few minutes later, Hyukjae arrived and was just in time. Nick gripped her shirt and hoped that everything went like she hoped for. "Ready for our next lesson?" he asked. Nick shook her head and looked at him. "I have something to tell you. And I shall tell you, through music," she sat down and started playing the music she prepared for him.
"Was that for me?" he asked. Embarrassed, she nodded slowly and looked to the ground. "You were the one that was on my mind when I made this.." Hyukjae was lost for words. He thought for awhile and then spoke, "I sense something about feelings and hope. And a pinch of love.." Nick slightly blushed knowing that probably Hyukjae got the idea already. Hyukjae giggled a bit and smiled. "Pabo, you can't mix love and beauty in a song," he said. "But I guess this turned out to be a sinful melody 'cause you broke the rule.."
"How?" she asked. Hyukjae leaned closer to her and whispered, "you weren't feeling the piano. You were feeling me," Nick blushed and asked him, "so does this mean you won't teach me anymore?" she didn't want everything to end. Somehow, she felt a tremendous urge to cry but didn't. Hyukjae shook his head. "I guess this can be an exception," he said. "Is it okay?" Nick asked him. Hyukjae nodded. "Yeahh I guess, since I'm also in love with you..."
Nick was surprised by the answer she was given. Did that really came out from his lips? "Is this for real?" she tried to confirmed him. "Do you want me to make a melody out of it, too?" he asked. Hesitated but she nodded. It would be a dream come true to have him playing a song for her. So he sat down right beside Nick and started playing his lullaby for her. It was River Flows in You by Yiruma. Nick started to shed a tear and she quickly wipe it off with her sleeve. Hyukjae looked at her and paused. He grabbed her hands, stopping her from continuing her intentions. "Don't. A tear is more meaningful than a thousand emotions. So don't wipe it off," he said calmly.
Nick was just too happy to have him beside her. She laid her head onto his shoulder and closed her eyes. "I love you," she whispered softly. Hyukjae's heart thumped "I love you too," And they both promised each other to always play those sinful melodies together side to side, forever.. and eternity.
